Giving Life
My wife and I dropped our son off at college today. It feels sad, different and maybe a bit scary. But deep down there is a strong sense of fulfillment. And pride. This is what we’ve prepared him for. This is the way it is supposed to be. And he’s happy as heck to be on his own.
This is how we are to be as leaders. We teach our teams right from wrong. We instruct them in their basic responsibilities, but increasingly offer them the responsibility of finding their own way to the result. Our goal is to raise them so we can let them go. And if we do it correctly, they will be excited too and take our performance to even higher levels.
As Churchill said, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”
